The art of the kaftan

From court dress to contemporary couture.

Home / Editorial / The art of the kaftan

The kaftan reached Morocco through Andalusia and the Ottoman court, where in Fès and Tetouan it took its own form: fuller, longer, and with the sfifa as its characteristic finish.

For centuries it was court dress. Only in the twentieth century did the kaftan become festive wear for everyone — for weddings, henna evenings and Ramadan.

Today it is moving again: cleaner lines, lighter fabrics, and colours beyond the classic gold and ivory. The technique stays, the silhouette changes.
